
A customer wrote to us this week and did something almost nobody does. Instead of asking which turbine to buy, they sent a link to their own weather station — a live meter on their own tower, logging wind speed continuously, with months of history behind it. They could not crunch the numbers themselves, so they asked us to. That is the right way round. And the kit that gets an ordinary customer to the same place is smaller and cheaper than most people expect: one TESUP Wizard, and one or two sensors plugged into it.

Why we keep going on about this
Power in the wind rises with the cube of wind speed. A site 20% slower than you assumed does not give you 20% less energy — it gives you roughly half. That single fact is why our own published annual range for a small turbine runs from 180 to 3,500 kWh. It is not evasion. It is the honest width of an answer that depends almost entirely on an address we have never seen.
One season of real measurements collapses that range to a number. It also answers questions no calculator can: whether your average is genuinely modest or genuinely good, whether your good hours are clustered or scattered, whether the wind arrives from a direction your building blocks, and — if you measure sunlight too — whether wind or solar is the better use of the same money at your address.
We are a company that sells turbines telling you to spend a season finding out whether you need one. That is not modesty. It is the only way the number at the end means anything.
The Wizard is the product. The sensors are the choice.
The TESUP Wizard is a hand-sized data hub, and it is the piece that turns a sensor into an answer. It reads an anemometer, a pyranometer or both, timestamps every reading and sends the record to the MyTESUP app, where you can watch it live and export it later. It is deliberately standalone: it does not need a turbine, a solar array or any existing energy system to be useful. Hang it on a post in an empty field and you are collecting evidence the same afternoon.
That standalone design is the whole argument of this page. Most monitoring hardware assumes you have already bought the generating equipment, which means it can only tell you how a decision turned out. The Wizard is meant to be bought before the decision, and the two sensors are simply what you point it at.

The anemometer measures horizontal wind speed regardless of direction, from 0.9 to 40 m/s. It survives gusts to 60 m/s and works from −40 °C to +85 °C, which matters because the instrument has to outlast the season you are measuring, on the same exposed spot the turbine would occupy.
The pyranometer measures solar irradiance in watts per square metre, from 0 to 1,600 W/m², using a photovoltaic reference cell tested under natural sunlight. It is what lets you calculate a real performance ratio for a PV array rather than trusting a map, and it is the instrument that tells you honestly whether your roof is a wind site, a solar site, or both.
One note for existing owners: if you already have an Atlas, these functions are built into the machine and you do not need a second Wizard.
What it costs, and what to skip
On this store, as this is published: the Wizard is £199, the anemometer £199 and the pyranometer £199. The Wizard is in every configuration, because nothing works without it. The sensors are where you should actually think.

We would rather you did not buy all three by reflex. If the question is only ever wind, configuration B — the Wizard and the anemometer — answers it for £398, and the pyranometer adds nothing. If you are weighing wind against solar on the same roof and the same budget, configuration C at £597 is the one that settles it, and it is cheap next to getting that choice wrong. And be clear-eyed about the arithmetic: £597 is a real fraction of what a complete machine costs. It is defensible when you are genuinely undecided. It is a waste when you already know your site is good and have simply not measured it yet.

This is the part the customer this week got right. Data you cannot process is not much better than no data. So let the Wizard log a season, export the CSV, send it to us, and our team will run it: annual yield for each machine, which of the three blade sets suits your wind profile, whether a vertical or horizontal turbine is the better fit for how your wind actually behaves, and how the same money would perform in solar instead. That analysis is free, and it is the same work we would do for a project ten times the size.

The wind and solar tiles are what the Wizard's sensors report. The energy figures below them come from a turbine — which you do not need in order to start measuring.
Sometimes the honest answer is that the site does not justify a turbine. We would still rather run the numbers and tell you so. A refund request six months after installation costs everyone more than a conversation before it.
The uncomfortable number
We checked our own order history before writing this, because it seemed fair to find out whether anyone actually takes the advice. Of everyone who has bought a turbine from us, about one in two hundred bought an anemometer before it. Most who own one bought it in the same basket as the turbine, which makes it a siting aid rather than a decision tool, and a few bought one afterwards — presumably to find out what they had.
We are not going to pretend that is anyone else's failing. If almost nobody follows the advice, the advice is being given badly, or a season is more than most people will wait. So here is the shorter version for the impatient: if you will not measure, at least assume less. Take the low end of any range, choose the blade set built for light wind rather than the one with the biggest number, and treat a good result as a pleasant surprise rather than the plan. That costs nothing and it is still better than optimism.
