From Sunlit Rooftops to Windy Skies: Madrid
Madrid lives in the light. The golden rooftops, the wide-open plazas, the endless skies above — all brimming with sun and movement. Now, homes across the city are turning not only to sunlight, but also to the wind, sending ripples of independence through urban life.
A Turning Point in Energy
Spain’s energy landscape is shifting dramatically. In 2024, solar photovoltaic (PV) power reached new heights — generating 44,520 GWh, or about 17% of the country’s total electricity production, making solar the largest power source that year. Meanwhile, renewables overall accounted for 66% of Spain’s installed capacity.
Also in 2024, Spain added a whopping 6 GW of new PV capacity, contributing to a total of 7.3 GW of renewable additions, as solar overtook wind to become the dominant technology. This expansion helped Spain’s renewables surpass 56% of total electricity generation for the first time, significantly lowering CO₂ emissions to historic lows.
Resilience at Home
On the home front, the momentum is equally real. Spain installed 1.4 GW of self-consumption PV systems in 2024, including 346 MW in residential rooftops, paired with 155 MWh of new energy storage capacity. That said, Q1 of 2025 saw a ~17% drop in residential installations year-over-year.
Meanwhile, the April 2025 nationwide blackout stirred public demand for off-grid resilience. Residential solar—and battery systems—saw an uptick in interest, with capacity dipping 9% year-over-year but rising 11% quarter-over-quarter, signaling strong consumer response to instability.
