A Brief History of International Women's Day

International Women's Day has a rich history that continues to inspire progress toward gender equality. The first IWD gathering took place in 1911, with over a million people attending events across Europe. The idea for this day of celebration was proposed by Clara Zetkin, a German activist, at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen.

The Soviet Union made IWD a public holiday in 1917, marking a significant moment in the global recognition of women’s rights. In 1975, the United Nations officially began celebrating IWD, further solidifying its importance on the global stage.
